Fibromyalgia was, until fairly recently, relatively unheard of. However, fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is thought to affect one in every 25 people – and doctors admit that there’s still a lot to learn about the condition that’s notoriously hard to diagnose and treat.
It hit the headlines recently when Desert Island Discs host, Kirsty Young, announced that she would be taking a break from her presenting duties for ‘a number of months’ because of the effects of FMS.
Lady Gaga is another well-known sufferer, and the famously hard-worker even had to cancel her 2017 European tour because of “severe physical pain that has impacted her ability to perform”. Her Netflix drama Gaga: Five Foot Two focused on her suffering, and helped shed light on fibromyalgia.
