CPISRA (Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association) to hold inaugural outdoor recreation camp for adults with Cerebral Palsy and related neurological conditions

Head of Recreation for CPISRA and Scottish Adventurer Julie McElroy talked to us about the exciting, upcoming outdoor adventure camp for adults with Cerebral Palsy being held by CPISRA.

CPISRA is the leading international sports and recreation association for Cerebral Palsy (CP) and related neurological conditions, and in 2019 is hosting its first outdoor recreation camp. The camp is being delivered by Calvert Trust in the Lake District, UK and will include activities such as bush craft, rock climbing, canoeing, horse riding and more. All activities at the Calvert Trust are fully accessible and are run by experienced instructors. The focus of the camp is to provide adventure opportunity and exposure to the outdoors for adults with Cerebral Palsy and related conditions. The camp will build personal development, break boundaries, challenge preconceptions, and create new friendships – not to mention be loads of fun!

Julie is no stranger to recreational pursuits and has previously led Disability Wilderness projects in conjunction with the National Trust for Scotland and the Forestry Commission all over the country. A keen adventurer, Julie was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when she was a child and is eager to help more people with disabilities experience the advantages of the outdoors.

Julie added; “I have always had a love of the outdoors and this camp is designed to enhance the confidence of the participants and also increase their personal development, by allowing them the chance to take part in a series of adventures that they haven’t before.”
Julie and CPISRA are now on the lookout for sixteen people with Cerebral Palsy or related neurological conditions to sign up and take on the adventure! The camp is open to adults aged 18+ of all impairment levels.

Peter Drysdale, CPISRA president said; “We are thrilled to be answering the call for more recreation opportunities with this inaugural outdoor adventure camp, and look forward to delivering it and more in the future. It will no doubt be an excellent week with space for individual personal development, team activities, trying new things and challenging yourself in a fun and safe environment.”
