CORONATION Street viewers have praised the ITV soap for featuring sign language between two deaf characters.
At the start of the first episode in tonight’s double bill, Robert Preston was seen serving food to a couple who were using sign language.
As he placed the menus down, they both gave him the sign for thank you before carrying on their conversation.
The moment didn’t go unnoticed by viewers, with one writing on Twitter: “Omg i’ve never seen signing actors and actress that is a first #Corrie #coronationstreet”.
Another added: “Nice to see some sign language with deaf actors being used in @itvcorrie tonight for #DeafAwarenessWeek18 #CoronationStreet.”
A third agreed, writing: “i love how Robert just served deaf people in the restaurant. well done @itvcorrie for showing diversity” while a fourth tweeted: “Loving the deaf couple signing in #Corrie #DeafAwarenessWeek18.”
However it isn’t the first time the soap has taken part in the movement, with a scene between two signing actors taking place in the Rovers Return back in 2016.
Deaf Awareness Week is a national initiative centred around promoting the positive aspects of deafness, encouraging social inclusion and championing deaf organisations.
